My dice sets. I was going through some serious retail therapy for my depression and might have spent about $1000 on scores of dice sets (over a period of several months to a year. But I almost have enough to fill a display case with only the d20s! Not that I would, because I use them too frequently and my apartment is currently too small for the display case.
Do you see an alternative? Each year more companies move to a subscription model, even when it doesn't make the slightest bit of sense. In many cases if you have the time to do proper research and/or a lot of technical savvy, you can find alternatives from companies no one recognizes. Most people don't have the time or know-how, and the companies that like subscription models are spending billions making sure their names are the only ones people think exist.
The majority of others aren't. The technology also isn't exclusive to Google, or won't be for long. Forget placing drugs on a person to have an excuse to arrest them, there will be photographic evidence, completely fake, of anyone counter to the system doing whatever crime they want to pin on us.
The whole point of the Settings "app" is to remove the user's ability to do anything on their own computer. The old (and far more functional) UI of the Control Panel won't get updated because Microsoft wants users to get scared when the unpretty UI appears.
We're currently rhyming with history from less than 100 years ago (the rise of fascism), I don't think having a warning is enough to prevent it from happening again.
