I'm happy to hear that you are safe and experienced no major damage. Hopefully, things get back to normal for you soon.

The houses in Florida are built considering hurricanes, so they are more sturdy. Also, Florida is super flat and it has been raining everyday for months, so the ground was permeable but a little full already. Because it's also near the ocean, the water can spread out into sea quickly.

The houses in NC are much less sturdy, so they would be more susceptible to wind damage. Also, because of the mountains, the valleys become pools of flood water. The ground there is much harder than in Florida, so it doesn't absorb the rain as much. Since the pools are in the mountains, there's only two ways for the water to leave. For the lucky valleys that aren't entirely surrounded, the water can escape through the gaps making temporary rivers. The other route is through evaporation, which takes a long time. This delays the ability of recovery efforts because people literally can't even get to the disaster zone.

During the Golden Age of Piracy, pirates would fly a red flag to communicate no quarter. That meant that if anyone decided to fight back would be killed because they were not taking prisoners.

Imagine being a miserable English sailor months from home, broke af, and hungry, when you're out in the ocean about to head back and you see this pulling up:

☠️ TIME TO MOTHERFUCKIN DIE ☠️

Back in the late 90s, I had a close friend in high school that went down the wrong path. He started dating a horrible girl and got into drugs pretty bad, so I had to cut him off. Later on when I was dating my high school gf, she told me she saw him outside some local store trying to sell oregano as weed and almost got himself killed. Weed now is for chill people, but back in the 90s, it's how hard and tormented souls used to self-medicate. Selling bogus weed to people was such a stupid risky idea, especially in our part of the city. Luckily, he had a coming to terms moment, quit that life, and ended graduating with an engineering degree from a pretty good university. Last I heard, he's still friends with that PoS girl though.

Fun fact! In April 1982, Key West seceded from the US and established the Conch Republic when the Feds started enforcing a roadblock that made travel between the Keys and the mainland a pain in the butt.

What is love? (lemmy.autism.place)

inb4 "Baby, don't hurt me."

But for real...what do people mean when they say "I love you," or "Do you love them?" I'm really confused by this because love seems to have such a varying definition. People say love for all sorts of things, and it seems like everyone else understands which definition they're using in the moment. Here are some examples in which each one has a different meaning:

  • I love pancakes.
  • I love my mother.
  • I love my romantic partner.
  • I love my best friend.
  • I love my career.
  • I love going to the beach.
  • My dog loves me.
  • That couple is in love.
  • Where is the love?

Background: I recently saw an episode of a show (spoiler below) where there was an adolescent heterosexual couple. The girl had a female best friend that she kissed, and is now confused about what she wants. She told her boyfriend about it. The boyfriend then asked her, "Do you love her?" What is he asking? If love means attachment and care, then clearly she does because that's her best friend. However, since that is so clear, he's not asking that. What is he asking??

Another specification is when people ask "Do you love them, or are you in love with them?"

I am confused by this term and the whole concept in general. I think I could really use some clarification, examples, or how to know which definition someone is going with when they use it.

Name of showThe show is Atypical on Netflix.

I live in Florida and am interested into meeting people that sail with the intent to be a hand on a sailboat for the experience and training. I know nothing about sailing nor do I know anyone that is into it. How can I get into the scene to meet people and feel things out?
