Seems like an easy workaround is to not use your phone as a payment method. Or am I misunderstanding the ars article (which, I must say, is very low quality in comparison to their usual ones)?

Fair point. I convincing the IT department at the past couple of jobs that I need it for productivity, and they can firewall it if it makes them feel better (I'll let them know run updates are available, and they can push the update).

If you MUST use windows for work or something, at least install OpenShell. Otherwise, use Linux. It's so easy to switch for most use cases. Even gaming on Linux has come a very long way.

I have two perfect logo ideas. One with a cute little penguin, the other with smirking gnu. Just spitballing here

E: corrected pitballing to spitballing, which my phone thought was the correct autocorrect...

Any decent laptop for hardware. ElementaryOS for the OS, if you really want the look/feel of macos.

We have a similar issue with defender, but those machines are internet connected, so we must have EDR on them.

They really shouldn't be sending the password over the line at all. It should be local hashed/salted, encrypted, and then sent. So plaintext length really shouldn't matter much, if at all. But I see your point.
