It was a CRT and it was bright AF at night. I remember getting a bunch of them in at the auto auction in the early 90s. They also had burned in screens by that time.

Now touchscreens are frequently cheaper than knobs
Touch screens for vehicles are a bad idea. If it weren't for lane keep assist and auto breaking cruise control, there'd be a lot more crashes on the road as people muck around in those screens that force you to look away from the road.
