The gloomy sentiment around Reddit Inc. has failed to dissipate after its shares fell 50% from a February high, with volatile technology stocks under pressure.

I'm not sure why anyone would ever buy Reddit stock. There is no money to be made in Reddit. They failed to make any money before they went public, and they're failing to make any money now.

They tried the whole NFT thing, failed. They're trying to sell the data to AI companies but once that's sold they can't sell any more of it because the benefit of Reddit data was historical data unpolluted by AI, but new Reddit data is polluted by ChatGPT posts and is therefore worth less.

It's not even about banning people, it's about the fact that Reddit was never a sustainable business model from the start, at least not in the traditional capitalist sense where you're actively trying to make a profit to please shareholders.

The only benefit to owning Reddit stock is if you have voting shares and can manipulate the algorithm to benefit you in some way. Suppress some voices, amplify others to back what you want to do etc. but you need money to burn in order to achieve that because you aren't going to be making money directly by owning Reddit stock and manipulating public opinion takes time.

Good. I got banned just today for "inciting violence" then when I asked what I did they couldn't tell me. Musk pressuring spez into harsher moderation is probably part of why I was actually banned. I followed every rule but was active in left wing communities and it seems that's enough to be deplatformed under the trump regime.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Holy shit, me too.

They said I threatened violence because in a thread about Putin potentially being sick, I said I wished he had a painful slow death.

Apparently even bloodthirsty dictators get to have their poor feelings protected by Reddit.

Fuck Reddit! I'm just gonna abandon that shit platform

I had two main accounts. My oldest account got permabanned for a joke about Nick Fuentes. After his address got doxxed and he pepper sprayed a woman who rang his doorbell back in December of last year, I said "hey as an incel he should be happy that the ladies know where he lives now so they can share a cocktail with him", and I added a cartoon gif of a Molotov. It was obviously a joke, but they said it was "promoting/glorifying violence". I ate the bullet on that one because they were technically right, even if they were a bunch of humorless twats.

My other account got banned about a month ago when I up voted a comment that was just a picture of Luigi Luigi (the Nintendo character) smoking a cigarette. Again for "promoting/glorifying violence".

Elon Musk is a weak little crybaby and Steve Huffman is a pathetic coward.

I was Permanently banned for harassment because I asked a mod why they banned me.

Mind you, I’d ask, and they’d mute me for a week straight instead of just pointing out what got me banned.

lol I pray for their downfall; this news pleases me.

Harsher moderation followed by a bot farm the richest man payed for to report every account that is critical of Nazis.

I'm not even kidding. At this point the amount of comments on Lemmy that I've read that had 10+ year old Reddit accounts banned for "inciting violence" is crazy. I was one of them a few months ago. Told a dude denying a Nazi salute was a Nazi salute to "go to hell where Nazis belong". Was banned within an hour. Permanent and IP/Metadata banned. Instant response of "no" to my unban request.

This is not a unique experience either. Leave reddit like it's the plague. Digg died because of bad decisions. Reddit seems like it's gonna become 4chan but for the mainstream. I don't know if it'll die. I think they're purging anyone that has leftist profiles.

The value of Reddit is the content which it is able to create. If users aren’t free to create content, there is not value.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

It certainly was what people drove there. That doesn't make money. The only value that counts for the bottom line is the data ultimately for marketing purposes. And the reach and trust that makes it great to sell shit.

It'll also be a great propaganda vehicle. Which might be worth even more in the current climate.

Anyways Reddit is dead. It ran far longer than many thought. But I think the cadaver won't stay fresh long enough to be eaten.

I think many of the tech giants are becoming scared. Because it might be a bit of hassle to just use another platform ultimately it's fucking easy to migrate and the when the momentum is there it can go pretty fast. No one really needs Amazon or Facebook or Reddit. And people really are pissed off. Fuck them. All these valuations for tech are just ludicrous when in the end the main driver is selling people shit more effectively.

I’m fairly certain they misled investors on their last earnings call. I noticed some banned accounts suddenly had their ban lifted right before the call, and then reapplied right after.

On the last investor call, they said they had a lot of returning users. This was after their election ban hammers, and prior to the Luigi ban fest.

Can’t wait to see how they try to spin things on the next one.

Hey cool beans we're the direct result of that! What good news!

I trust reddit as far as I can throw it these days.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 5 days ago

Fuck Reddit.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 6 days ago

One man's slowing growth is another man's hardening growth (me, from reading this headline).

[–] [email protected] 35 points 6 days ago

I mean, with all the censoring and pandering to Musk, allowing for entire bot swarms to the point it really becomes obvious it's happening - who could have predicted this?

That's right, kids. Allying yourself with fascist tendencies in any way, shape or form will hurt you in the long run. Just provide the damn service people are looking for and stop playing god, trying to use your platform to shape opinions and censor statements you or your buddies don't like.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 6 days ago

Shouldn't suprise anyone especially with the recent grovelling before Musk.

I've created this account here today particularly because I found that behaviour absolutely disgusting.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 6 days ago (8 children)

I wonder how long until they ban porn. That'll kill it dead for sure.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Idk, I doubt the advertising partners really have a problem with reddit porn. This dip is likely a reflection of the article linking reddit moderation policies to Elon Musk (absolutely hilarious that he's so toxic to stocks he's killing other people's companies now). I don't think this is even a reflection of a drop in users yet,

I just don't understand why a person would choose to invest in Reddit. What exactly is the value proposition here?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago

Surely people will enjoy pay walled content.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago (3 children)

They source the data for AI.

However, their owner is a duck so he's prob gonna atrophy users away, so it's not an investment you'd go long on.

I'm so glad it will create and burn ever since they prevented RIF from working for their own ad-ridden version to be used.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago

6 months after that, they still didn't have tablet support. Absolute bullshit.

Fuck reddit , its becoming weird being on there ... its feels off , like you're in an uncanny valley not knowing if you are taljing to a bot , a person or a troll

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I remember when Reddit threads would have 50000 plus comments on the regular that felt like real discussions where karma kept the assholes in control. The front page always felt full of new things and it felt democratic in a way. In recent years it feels empty, algorithmic, and just kind of sad. Reddit felt like a safe place even with some of the grimier subreddit becoming popular. Now it's just a oligarch pandering Nazi sympathizer platform. I was on there for 12 years and am happy I left it behind.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago

Sadly i have to be there as its the best place to get news about the place im living in , our newspapers work for our govenment and other channels are usually controlled opposition ... reddit is the most trustworthy (its so ironic to tell you that but it is)

So I work in advertising for a company that is top 20 on the Fortune 500. We advertise everywhere including Reddit.

The returns on Reddit isn't even very good. We still spend money there as a pure name recognition play.

As of now, for the company I work for, it's not working.

No surprise; It's seemingly all bots arguing with other bots now anyway.

It might be at least a little missed for all the useful info and history that it had accumulated over these decades... But oh well.

I mean. Elon Musk is exerting control of the platform too. Do you really want THAT shit in your cereal?

Good, hopefully spez will get what's coming to him. He really ran the site into the ground.

I left when I couldn't use the word "idiot" because it was a trigger word.

Sure Jan.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 6 days ago

I see the fall of big social media into fascism as a big problem, despite the fact that it makes them less popular. The nazis are actively destroying spaces for communication of opposing opinions. They don't mind the medias are harmed by that. The important thing is that what remains becomes a fascist echo chamber. Most normal people won't be able to find alternatives like lemmy, so it makes the numbers of people with opposing views who are able to communicate smaller with every fall of a medium, social or other.

Get! Wreckt! Spaz!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Got banned over there a month ago, came here hoping to find something of a Sonic community in the same vein as the one over there (very involved in that fanbase, did a lot of my discussion on reddit), has not materialized yet, not enough fans over here, hopefully that changes at some point. I thought at first that it was the open support of Luigi's alleged actions that got me banned, I could be ok with that, I get it, supporting violence and whatnot, I broke the rules, and they were sensible rules more or less, but the longer I look at the current happenings over there, the more suspicious I am that it was because his name came up at ALL, multiple times. That's annoying. That feels less justified.

Also becoming more and more glad it happened when it did. Lot of overt, fascist appeasing censorship going on over there. Like it's not even subtle. There's no ambiguity in it, it's just "this post criticized or disparaged Musk or Trump in some way. (Removed from Reddit)."

cant be all those ban waves can it? feb 12-13th was the start of a massive account purging from the site,a nd you wonder why the engagment fell, leaving russian troll farms mostly intact, plus MUSK constant brigading on the site. remember MUSK is chronically ONLINE because hes on cocaine and ketamine.

by NOV-FEB there were already 3 ban waves, and the luigi+upvote bans was the 5th.
