i'm not angry at social media or anything!! i just really want my own space in the web for expressing myself and for posting all my art and programming snippets. i could potentially build a website and use github to host it, is that good?? even if it's not a known website, i still would like it. again, i am not mad or sad with social media but.. i think some of it is taking a lot of my time!! i'm going to be honest tho, on my reddit account i just got to 1k karma!! because i've posted art and memes people have upvoted! but oh well, thank you

Start off with a github pages static site so it's free and you can get a feel for it. I'm assuming this is for blog posts? I've seen some cool blogs about how to use embedded mastodon to add comments to your blogs (assuming you link to the blog page in a mastodon post).

You can build a website, you don't have to delete your social media first

true, thank you

You should have a website for the content you create. You should repost that content wherever, but you should have a central location that you own and refer people back to.

Why not having both?

Never care about karma or Internet points. They don't mean anything and caring about them makes social media addictive and unsatisfying.

Websites can be cool, but realistically you'll get a lot less interaction than lemmy/reddit

Maybe you could delete Reddit. But you can self-host your own lemmy instance in addition to you website. It does not hurt to have your own website in addition to social media.

However, you cannot host a lemmy on github pages.

They're not exclusive.

I have a website (check my profile) and I also post here. One is my personal space, like my virtual home (like my home, I pay for it) the other is a space where I can share content and participate in open discussions when I fancy doing so.

i’m going to be honest tho, on my reddit account i just got to 1k karma!!

What is karma worth today? Ask your banker how well karma trades against dollars and see what you can you buy with 1k karma, or with 7.4K karma... yep, I just logged back into my reddit account to check how much karma I had in my reddit-bank account :p

It's worthless. It's just a gimmick and a trick to keep people wasting even more of their time. Like you said:

i think some of it is taking a lot of my time!!

It does. And not some of it, most of it.

Focus on what matters, which is not some virtual reward that has zero value.

I made a community for my “firehose” of links. Some people seem to hate it and one guy even called me a bot.

But I don’t care. It’s for me.

Maybe try that.

The hard part is getting anyone to look at it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

Unless you hosted it on Neocities

Its basically a xitter/mastodon, yelling into the void

You could start by just posting in your own locked com and see if you will actually write anything. For blogging website I like ghost.

i could potentially build a website and use github to host it, is that good??

Yes. It is good.

As a manager who hires programmers, candidates who share a website with some code they have written and their thoughts about it probably get a more relaxed interview with me.

I quite like Lemmy, it's a good reddit and being federated it never goes down completely. It's also much more open, if one is getting bullied away from one's hobby-niche by moderators one can just make an alternative on another instance, or make their own instance.

I never thought about using github to host a website. I agree with brkdncr. If you are creative and productive you should host your own website to show it off and if you engage in social media link to it.
