revanced manager has 12 patches for it, the ad blocking ones work at least. although I'm also running an ad block DNS, but I haven't tried any of the other features because the ad block is the only recommended one.

I'm currently using Distraction Free Instagram which allowed me to disable the explore and reels tabs. Also appears to block ads. ~~Sadly not open-source~~
I do too. It is open source https://www.distractionfreeapps.com/source.html
That's an unconventional way of sharing source. How do we know the built apk is built from that source?
I agree, I am not the one that made the app. But anyway it's exactly the same with github apk releases. Just build the app with the code and compare I guess ?
True, but that's why F-Droid exists
Is the ad blocking a separate option somewhere? There are sponsored posts in the feed for me.
Edit: it also doesn't do what it says on the tin, it goes right back to the suggested posts if there are no new ones from people you follow.
Tried it but nothing showing up in the feed.
Is there anything else to do?
Take a look at the settings
I use Revanced Instagram.
Any specific issue you have with Instander? It's working perfectly fine for me. Only if people post to their story it takes a few minutes to show.
The latest version is so old I got a prompt to update every time I opened the app.
Aeroinsta I couldn't get installed, their website forces me to turn off my adblocker but I think it picked up Firefox's tracker blocking
Honista I couldn't log in, it forced me to turn off my VPN ad blocking (DuckDuckGo blocking trackers)
I wouldn't trust either with the ad-free experience
MyInsta is simply just the Instagram site on mobile. I do get Instagram's first party ads, still
If memory serves me well, Barinsta used to be good, now I can't get it to log in, anymore
MyInsta is not just the website. It's a mod just like the others. https://myinsta.app The developer claims to not obfuscate his additional code, which seems nice, but I didn't check that.
I never checked the website's functionality, but the app just serves me something that looks 1:1 like Insta's mobile site, plus Instagram's first party ads. I got the impression it was just an Electron browser with adblock pre-installed
That's really weird. I included the link just in case we were talking about different mods both named MyInsta. For me, MyInsta is a normal mod of Instgram's android app, very similar to Instander or Aeroinsta (and probably others, I haven't tried them)
I haven't used it in a while but Aeroinsta was good and probably safe (despite their shady website). Gets rid of unnecessary stuff like ads and allows downloading.
I use myinsta. It's great for removing ads, etc. But there are some minor glitches (eg. repeatedly asking for contacts/location permissions) and it seems to take up more storage.
Right now I'm using InstaPro. It's receiving frequent updates and as for now, I don't have any major complaints about it.
If you want to download it, its official website is instamod.net. Watch out for fake links you may find on Google.
Just went on instamod.net, filled with malware ads popping everywhere on my screen
Always use an adblocker. With ublock, no issues at all.
I also have ublock. It's not regular ads, it's custom scams
