If course its made up... Even if you don't hear it, you can still smell it and know that it's not something appropriate to do at a restaurant or when there are people around.
In the almost impossible case it's not made up, what a failure from the parents, most of all.
maybe they're deaf too
But surely they'd have smelt one or two and thought to pass on the knowledge they had. Unless they also didn't know and you just keep going up the family tree until you find the original failing parents.
