They said they submitted it online and gave me the temporary registration paper. That was at the end of last month. I checked the status tonight and it is still not under my name in the dmv database. The last thing I need is an ex-boyfriend abusing the badge to pull me over and harass me because the registration is late from the dealership. Call me paranoid, but I now carry copies of my registration on me, as well as in my car now, along with copies of the bill of sale. I live in a small town where some ex could very well be setting me up to be screwed over. Welcome to my life, everyone.

Note: They say it takes 15 to 30 days to have the registration be up to date in the dmv system. DMV has one week from today to make that window of time happen for me here. I desperately bought a used car because I had no way to get to work. It was very low budget. If someone screws me over between the dealership and DMV, I’ll need a lawyer. I’m sure there will be so many comments saying, “don’t worry!”, or “it hasn’t been 30 days yet!” I haven’t had a registration take 30 days in the past.

If you talk to the DMV you might be able to get an extension on the temporary sticker. Depends on the state.

$35 for an extra 21 days here.

I’ve heard of that, but I paid the registration fees at the dealership. I paid for 6 months, according to what they told me. My current registration is supposed to be good until August since the dealership paid for registration in February. The registration should be transferred over to my name, though. That’s the part that is making me worry.

Oh, yeah, that's nothing in DMV time, you should be fine.

Oh, and all this is happening right at the same time as a serious pet emergency occurred. It’s like punishment for buying a used car to get to work each day.

I would also badger the dealership and check the status because they might say, "we forgot to submit the paperwork for your plates."

You’re right. I think I’m going to reach out to them soon.

When I got my car it was the last week before it expired. DMV has been having a hard time keeping up with demand since COVID apparently.

How recent is this? Because if it was in 2024, it's ridiculous to keep blaming COVID.

It was in 2023. Car sales went up a lot. Not sure if it has died down yet. People are still working from home / getting pushed back to work forcing them to get cars again. People getting brand new cars it's worse since there is always a limited supply of them so it may take years for car sales to go back to normal.

It took me over a year with the CA DMV to get a title issue sorted out. So it could be either party with the delay. I called them 2x a week checking on updates, spending hours each time working up the ladder. It's not unusual to wait abnormally long for a reg in California.

I sold my car to a dealer. They made a show about going to take off my old plates since I needed new ones for my new car.

Four weeks later, I get a toll bill for someone driving my old beater across the city.

Yeah, last time I relied on a used car dealer to unregister my vehicleI got a parking ticket two weeks after the sale.
