You’re the first person I’ve ever heard defend micro usb lol. So congratulations there.

Yes Apple branded lightning cables break pretty easily. Not the fucking port in the phone though. Way to ignore that.

“Android” isn’t a single maker. Sure galaxies and pixels are USB3.0 or 3.1. The vast majority of cheapo Android phones use 2.0.

I'm skeptical that this happens anywhere remotely near frequently enough to condemn the entire technology. Never seen it, and never heard about it until just now.

I would love for you to find a single noteworthy android manufacturer that is not in this list. *Edited because this link was not working correctly on desktop site

I have three kids. I have had to buy parts off of eBay and replace the ports on both of my PS4 controllers. They see way, way less use than any of the kids iPhones, or mine or my wife's. I have a Kindle that has to be propped "just-so" to charge.

I really don't give much a shit if everyone in this thread hates apple, but micro-usb is a fucking garbage connector that frankly, USB-C shares too much in common with. If you stepped on a lightning cable that was in a device, you probably need a new cable. If stepped on a micro-usb, you probably need a new device and new cable. USB-C, you need a new cable and you might need a new device (see also, me figuring out how to fix the kids oculus this week.)

Speculative claims and vitriolic anecdotes are not convincing. There are other factors here that could explain these discrepancies- if they exist at all, because again this comment is so inflammatory that it reeks of personal bias, bad faith, or fabrication- such as: how kids treat gaming peripherals as opposed to phones, placement of the charging port on the device, placement of the items in your house, quality of materials in the device (remember you're comparing phones to old, $60-$100 items), your perspective focusing more on negative experiences than positive, etc.

Your comment, which I quoted in my reply, is itself a speculative and anecdotal piece of data. My "vitriolic" anecdote is literally just an anecdote, which is in no way vitriolic. My "inflammatory" comments? Can we not say fuck on the internet anymore?

I also work in IT supporting various tablets. Have to go back a little bit before USB C was gaining traction, but We mostly use iPads (like 4-5x more iPads) but used Fire tablets with micro USB. The iPads get used like iPads, the Fire tablets were mostly stationary. Since like 2015 when we adopted iPads, I've never had to replace due to a failed port. We stopped buying Fire tablets because I had to replace about 1/3 of them due to failure of the port in around 2 years of service vs 8 years on the iPads with no failures.

Granted, this sample size here is only like 50 devices in total so I'm sure it's just more "vitriolic" anecdata.

Good point. On the positive side, I've never seen a Lightning port fail in my family, my extended family, or from any of my friends, or in my job. Another positive is micro USB is almost dead and replaced by much less trash connectors. Golly gee don't tell micro USB all the micro USB stans (which I guess have shown up exclusively for this thread) I said that, would hate to offend. Of all of the things I've ever said on the internet, boy did I not expect calling micro-usb garbage to be controversial.

Said comment was a question of a claim. There's no speculation or anecdote involved with wanting more evidence. If you want me to make an anecdotal assertion so badly, I'll oblige.

I've worked analytic jobs that involved harvesting data off of virtually every tablet you can think of after running tests, worked other jobs that had SOPs, AIs, and data entry on tablets, been around tech my whole life (big nerd), and had to suffer the destructive storm that is children. You would think based on your claims I would've come across a single USB port or USB cable failure. Zilch.

Also I think I made myself quite clear that your tone is vitriolic. It's extremely difficult to engage with somebody that has made up their mind already.

You do know that the connector is separate from the protocol right?

The galaxy S23 ultra comes with a usb 2.0 type c cable in the box.

If you want a 3.2 cable with 45W charging you have to buy it separately.

I’ve been using the same lightning cable that I got with my iPhone 12. What the fuck do y’all do with your cables?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't know, you can't put anything past people. Remember that whole "charge your phone in the microwave" campaign? LOL

This is true lol.
