You can get a model 3 in the US for ~$30k

That's... expensive ? The last car I bought new was 17.000€ (12 years ago, a Citroën Berlingo).

The model 3 in Europe is 43.000€.

Yes, well, things haven't gotten cheaper over the years... that's the way things generally tend to work. And that sounds like a much lower quality car. Average new car price in the US is ~$40k.

You have to account for the cost of ownership in that purchase price. But it sounds like you may need to investigate your local EV incentives.

I'm ready for a Toyota Corolla EV or similar for a much lower price, but Japan seems to be on a warpath against EVs.

It's way more practical than a Tesla. Whatever, the Berlingo model now starts at 39.000€ (EV only). That's twice the price I bought mine. My salary has not doubled in 10 years.

The Berlingo can be driven in the rain.

Japan actually has quite a lot of cheap and small EVs in their domestic market, but they don't seem to be interested to export or manufacture them for other market. Chinese companies on the other hand are very eager to fulfill this niche.
