I first saw this news over on Reddit, immediately searched for an alternative. Got home from work and now here I am

Welcome.

Best advice I can give you is to just give Lemmy some time. It can feel a bit empty at first because there's less content than Reddit but

  1. I've been on here 4 months and have already seen a major increase in users.

  2. Spend some time seeking out subs and joining. At first I wasn't finding enough new content to keep me occupied during various downtimes during the day, but now I've got more than enough new stuff every day to keep me entertained.

Thanks for the advice.

Yeah, I completely understand that it's not gonna be as popular as Reddit immediately, but I know that if I felt the need to jump ship, other people will too.

I'm most just searching through All and sorting by new ATM trying to find some interesting things to read about and topics to discuss

You mean horrified/nauseous right? Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I'm also kind of new, and if you're doling out advice, I've got a quesiton: If I were interested in potentially modding someday, what kind of things should I learn/read up on to handle that kind of responsibility? I want to help build communities so I can selfishly enjoy them, but im feeling too new so far.
