The stock Graphene SMS app sucks, it lacks basic features and customization that standard SMS apps have.

I see no real need to keep it for security and privacy reasons unless someone can share legitimate information about the application for a need to keep it that is note worthy I am all ears to be educated.

I'd like to explore other privacy focused SMS alternative apps. Not services. Just the app. Thanks! I hope this helps others too. I can't be the only one! I chose top 3 because I would rather not try 50 apps. Just the cream of the crop.

Let's say I've got Nextcloud selfhosted in my basement and that it is accessible on the world wide web at nextcloud.kickassdomain.org. When someone puts in that URL, we'll have all the fun DNS-lookups trying to find the IP address to get them to my router, and my router forwards ports 80 and 443 to a machine running a reverse-proxy, and the reverse-proxy then sends it to a machine-and-port that Nextcloud is listening to.

When I do this on my phone next to that computer hosting Nextcloud, (I believe) what happens is that the data leaves and re-enters my home network as my router sends the data to the IP address it is looking for (which is itself). This would mean that instead of getting a couple hundred Mbps from the local wifi (or being etherneted in and getting even more), I'm limited by my ISPs upload speed of ~25Mbps.

Maybe that just isn't the case and I've got nothing to worry about...

What I want my network to do is to know that nothing has to leave the network at all and just use the local speeds. What I tried before was using a DNS re-write in Adguard such that anything going to my kickassdomain would instead go to the local IP address (so like nextcloud.kickassdomain.org -> 192.168.0.99). This seemed to cause a lot of problems when I then left the house because, I assume, the DNS info was cached and my phone would out in the world and try to connect to that IP and fail.

My final goal here is that I want to upload/download from my selfhosted applications (like nextcloud) without being limited by the relatively slow upload speed of the ISP.

Maybe the computer already figured all this out, though - it does seem like my router should know it's own IP and not bother sending things out into the world just for them to come back.

If it matters, my IP address is pretty stable, but more importantly it is unique to me (like every house in the neighborhood has their own IP).

Updates from testing: So everything does indeed just work without me needing to change how I already had it set up, presumably because the router did the hairpin NAT action folks are talking about here.

I tested it by installed iperf3 on the server then I used my phone (using the PingTools Network Utilities android app, only found on google play and not on f-droid) to connect. Here are the results:

1. Phone to local IP address (192.168.0.xxx) - ~700 Mbits/second
2. Phone to speedtest.mykickassdomain.org while still on the wifi - ~700 Mbits/second
3. Phone on cellular to speedtest.mykickassdomain.org - ~4 Mbits/second

I thought one of the advantages of the Fediverse was to have one account but access to many services. Is this possible just not common? I already have a Lemmy account and Mastodon and I didn't want to start making more just to try out the other services.

How can a group of volunteers build at least the tech for a replacement for the internet?

I was hoping that each individual user could run and maintain a piece of the infrastructure in a decentralized grassroots way.

How can users build a community owned and maintained replacement for the internet?

I hope that we can have our own servers and mesh/line/tower infrastructure and like wikipedia/internet-archive type organization and user donations based funding.

How could this be realized?

Can this be done with a custom made router that has a stronger wifi that can mesh with other's of it's kind? like a city wide mesh? or what are ways to do this?

In my local community, we have a WhatsApp group for mutual help and services / goods exchange, the rule is no money, so it's mostly populated by leftists more or less open to understand the problematics of internet privacy (for context). There are a bit more than 350 persons.

Today, someone sent a message telling everybody that he's leaving Meta products for good, thus this group. A few other persons complained about meta, then I suggested that we could all leave WhatsApp and go on Signal and I briefly explained the network effect by saying that if no one uses signal because nobody is on it, then no one will ever use it if nobody takes the first step.

And this argument worked because an admin just created a signal group! More than 50 persons already switched!

Obviously the WhatsApp group will not be abandoned right away, but it has been decided that both groups will be used for now, then we'll see at the end of the year which group we abandon.

I really see hope in that kind of events, because if I managed to make more than 50 people switch, a portion of them will do the same for their other groups and family / friends.

I plan on hosting little conferences with this group on the libre culture and the attention economics, so hopefully I'll convince all of them that it's the right thing to do!
