If so, how?

Self-hosting services has been a life-changer. And I thank this community for helping me a lot recently. Not only did I learn a lot more about linux, network and docker, but it helped me understand better how platforms and advertising just f*cked up the internet I grew up with.

But I wonder: do any of you hate how self-hosting services like photo- or document-management systems, or even a simple rss tool, forces you to sort your stuff out, and put your decades old files in order?!

I'm in the process of migrating my web browser bookmarks to linkding because it's a GREAT tool. But I have like 2k websites to manualy check wether they're still there, wonder at how cool they still are, tag properly and archive with SingleFile!

And that's just ONE service...

No offense to old people, its just an observation I've made.

I'm talking about games that you still like but you had no idea were criticized so much.

The perfect example for me is Sonic Unleashed.

I admit that the game has its bad things, but I would have never imagined that it was so hated at the time... Although, that could be extended to the entire Sonic franchise, since for many years I was not aware at all of that "Sonic was never good", "Sonic had a rough transition to 3D" nonsense.

I have a Kbin account just to try it, which I normally use, and I have a community there, but I can’t figure out how to change the photo? Thanks! 🙏

There is a trend currently were fan translaters are paywalling the latest chapters, with poor translations. What are your thoughts on this? I don't mind asking for donations, but asking for money with mediocre translation is scammy.

So to preface, like everyone else, I came from reddit, a website that I left due to some subs that I don’t want to name as they are personal to me.

The reason I left is because it got flooded with stupid people, and I realised that the only reason I kept using Reddit was to argue with those fools.

But the thing is, that simply cutting out reddit didn’t solve my problem, which is that I really hate a lot of people and I’m not even going to deny it.

A lot of them deserve it tho, I’m mostly talking about those jerks who try to stample on others to feel better about themselves. I hate how this word got “ruined” but to be precise I’m talking about “bigoted” people.

Anyways l just because they “deserve” the hate (or don’t) I still feel angry after meeting people like this and I honestly don’t know what to do now.

You might've heard that search sucks on software X... maybe software Y... definitely on software Z. The default one kind of sucks on NodeBB too, admittedly.

But why? It's because search is really frickin' hard to get right, and expensive to get good at.

Remember that Google started as a search company, and they became king because they got really good at it, and it was their only product (at the time, anyway!)

The easiest type of search is "full text" search. It matches words exactly based on what you type in. For example if you search lemmy it would match posts that include the word lemmy but depending on how the content was indexed, might not match lemmy.world, lemmy.ca, lemmyverse, etc.

From there you start adding complexity like supporting AND and OR. You support partial matches (lem returns posts containing lemmy and lemmings).

Add more logic to remove stop words and articles like a, the, etc.

Put in some sorting logic to rank stuff higher (what's your algo? Recency? Votes? etc.)

That's just the tip of the iceberg... this problem domain is so vast that entire companies have been built around just providing searching as a service (e.g. Algolia), and it isn't cheap!

With the recent changes to how Google is doing things with Android, is it even worth it anymore? Should I just accept whatever version of Android comes with whatever phone or are custom ROMs still worth it? Assuming they still exist after all of this, idk what's going on.

Hello, I just wanted to share my story regarding having a domain with Njalla using ProtonMail/SimpleLogin's services.

TLDR (full story below): You may not be able to send emails from your domain with ProtonMail/SimpleLogin if your domain is registered with Njalla (or any other "privacy-friendly" domain registrar).

Full-story:

I had a domain with Njalla (njal.la) for a couple of years, and at the same time, I was using this domain with ProtonMail (to send emails from my domain) and SimpleLogin (catch-all aliases with my domain). I never had any issues during the last few years until recently:

• A few months ago, beginning of 2025, I suddenly wasn't able to send emails from my domains/aliases: They were rejected ("Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender") because I was listed on Spamhaus (a service which lists domain reputation, check.spamhaus.org). I contacted Proton's support, and they advised me to reach out Spamhaus directly to resolve this issue. I was able to request a delisting of my domain "automatically" (through a form), and a few days later, my domain had been "automatically" delisted and I was thus able to send emails again.
• A month ago, my domain has suddenly been re-listed on spamhaus, again. This time, I wasn't prompted with the automatic delisting form like the first time. I had to contact through a form Spamhaus and I had to write a small text requesting to be delisted and explaining to them how I was not using my domain for spamming/scaming/bulk email sending/etc... This time, spamhaus refused to delist my domain because my domain was considered as an Internet neighbourhood with “poor reputation” that has shared (or inevitably will share) its negative reputation. (...) The domain is not eligible for removal while being associated with this neighbourhood. We recommend moving your domain to a hosting network with good reputation.. I was talking with Njalla's support and ProtonMail's support at the same time, and they basically both told me that there is nothing they could do. I was basically forced to transfer my domain to a new domain hoster provider. And not any other domain hoster, but one with a "good" reputation (when I asked if transfering to 1984 (https://1984.hosting/), a privacy-friendly domain provider, Spamhaus discouraged me to do so.

To sum it up, by having your domain with any privacy-friendly service (like Njalla, 1984, ...), there is a chance that your domain will be listed on Spamhaus, preventing you from using your domain with ProtonMail/SimpleLogin.

I find it ironic from Proton, as they even encourage using Njalla/1984 in one of their blog article: https://proton.me/blog/professional-domain-and-email. At the end, I'm a bit pissed by Spamhaus's behaviour and also ProtonMail for using such services.
