Medhurst points to Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 in the U.K. as one of the broad laws being used to silence people like him. “If they really want to, they can charge you for just saying a simple fact just because the fact is uncomfortable to the government or perhaps they can twist it into saying you’re glorifying a group but it’s not true,” he explains.

For Medhurst, the U.K. pinned Schedule 12(1A) on him, which he explains “has never been used before, and escalated it straight to an arrest.” They then took his “fingerprints, [his] DNA, [and] they put [him] in jail for 24 hours.”

Despite his accurate reporting, Medhurst says that the validity of what one says does not matter when it conflicts with the establishment line. “You’re not glorifying anyone. You’re just stating a fact, but they can still charge you. That’s what’s so dangerous about this law,” he said.

Food retailers have seen a “massive” increase in pensioner shoplifters over the last year, a security firm has said.

John Nussbaum, director of service for retail at Kingdom Security, said his staff were seeing a “different sort of shoplifter now” as the cost of living “pushes people to something they’ve never done before”.

Was walking down the street the other day. Taking my Pfand to the shop to cash it in and go shopping. Broad day light, nice weather day after many ugly weather days so everyone is looking rather happy in general.

I pass by a local soccer club, lots of youths coming and going by bicycle, it must have been like 5 or 6 in the evening and it seems like one group just ended training and another is starting.

A sparkling white tesla drives up to the entrance of the club, while doing so: blocks the cycle path... was wondering why the kids had to be dropped off at the door with this nice weather.

Anyhow: car stops at the old clothes collection container, passenger gets out: it's a fit young woman (driver is a young man), she walks to the trunk of the car, casually takes out bags of trash and puts them next to the "old clothes" container. It's clearly not bags of old clothes, and she's no putting it in the container but next to it. She takes out a broken vacuum cleaner: casually puts it behind the container, between the soccer club and a small parking lot and a park.

I tell her this is not the place for that and ask her if she can load it in to her car again. She acts like she's from another planet and doesn't understand me. She knows perfectly well. See the guilt in her face. She stays silent, rushes back to the car seat. They drive off, I give the middle finger and a "you're a fucking wanker" sign. We meet again like 100 meters further where they have to stop for red traffic light. They try to ignore me and stare ahead, avoiding all eye contact. Not talking to eachother either. I don't start yelling or hitting the car or whatever, because I didn't wanna cause a scene at the youths/soccer club.

These were really very very "decent" and "normal" looking people. Young, wealthy, healthy, white, with a car. How hard is it to drive 4 minutes to the recycling plant at the edge of the city and dump your trash where it belongs for practically free?

"Normal" people who have dumped their trash where it doesn't belong: WHY?

I (22M) grew up in a rural-adjacent suburb where the culture was complete dogwater. My dad openly fantasized about committing violence against minority groups ever since I was a young child, and he constantly threatened to kill me if I ever turned out to be gay. The public school I went to was full of bullies who singled me out for being emotional and therefore easy to pick on.

I never turned out to be gay, but I did turn out to be very gentle and emotional. In my natural state, I want to be sweet and caring and talk in a higher-pitched, softer manner. I love cute things, I love making people happy, and I love fantasizing about big strong women who will protect and care for me.

I have had very few opportunities to express myself. Various factors like disabilities and my older brother surveilling me in K-12 school (by using my bullies as a spy network to report every weird thing I did) made it impossible to express myself without being abused at home for it.

In recent years, I have been able to spend some limited time on my own without constant surveillance. The people I've talked to, typically from chatting with people at various appointments I've been dropped off at, seem to have a very laissez-faire "be yourself" attitude and don't seem very interested in persecuting weirdos like me. One of them even corrected me for accidentally saying something politically incorrect. This wasn't even that close to the city—this was adjacent to the new suburbs that my family moved to recently.

Still, it's hard to shake off a decade of paranoia about getting found out and beaten for being, in my dad's words, a "pansy". I keep stopping myself from expressing any kind of emotion in public for fear of what will happen to me. Tomorrow is the first time I get to visit my city proper, which is said to be fairly progressive and has big pride parades every year (around 1 million people turn out). And yet, I keep telling myself that I can't because some fascist goon could be watching and signal to all of the other fascist goons to jump me.

Is it safe to just be me now, or do I still have to be very careful about when and where to express myself? I'm so tired, honestly. I just want to be allowed to exist for once in my life.
